“Today, we understand that peace through strength is more than a slogan. In a world such as ours, it’s a moral necessity, and in the tough job of preserving the peace and defending our nation’s independence and freedom, the U.S. Marines have always been there, ready to do their duty.”
President Ronald Reagan
One of my ancillary billets in the Corps was Substance Abuse Control Officer. When I got out, I went on the Chemical Dependency Counselor, later to Mental Health Counselor.  A tool that has worked all along the way is well known to the 12-Steppers.
AA type programs teach a principle called HALT. HALT is an acronym for Hungry-Angry-Lonely-Tired, and the idea is that any one of these conditions of mind and body can be a threat to continued sobriety. HALT is an article of faith, based on years of collective experience. It’s not considered all that important why these visceral states might be related to relapse.
Day in and day out, I observe those around me making important decisions related to life, love and business matters when they are hungry, angry, lonely or tired
The simplest way to look at the HALT Principle and how it relates to our physical bodies is like this:
When we are Hungry, our bodies need sustenance.
When we are Angry, our bodies need quiet.
When we are Lonely, our bodies need closeness.
And when we are Tired, our bodies need rest.
H. Make sure that whether you are hungry or not, you eat something, even if it’s just a small snack.
A. If you feel angry, did a little deeper and see if you can put a name on what is behind the anger. Resentful for … hurt that…. offended they…
L. Even if you don’t have someone you can’t call to come over and visit or go to their place, how about a coffee shop? You don’t have to say anything to anyone, but even reading the paper in the presence of people is important.  Book stores are great too.
T. I know how hard it is to sleep when your mind is racing.  Even if you can’t close your eyes, lay down. Stay there for at least 30 minutes. Try to listen to slower, calmer music.  Hypnosis recordings are great too. Contact me for great suggestions.
Hope this helps.  Semper Fi brothers. – Crowbar
